Ogun Central Youths And Their Prominent Roles In Politics

By: Kehinde Adekunjo

Youth Participation in Ogun Central Politics Politics around the world is said to be local. Every politician that aspires to reach the nadir of the game of politics knows the importance of their immediate environment. This underscores the importance of grassroot in the art of politics.

In politics, the involvement and participation of Youths cannot be overemphasized. They play vital roles in nation development.

In this interview, we shall be examining the roles of youths in Nigeria politics and we shall be focusing on Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The choice of Obafemi Owode LGA is informed by the fact that the ratio of youth involvement in politics in that LGA is so pronounced to the extent that it attracted our attention even though we are not based in the state.

Can we meet you ma (Full name, Ward, current political assignment and  Academic background):

My name is Bamigbaye Afolake Abiola

I’m from Obafemi owode, Ofada;ward2

I’m currently contesting for Ogun State House of assembly representing Obafemi owode constituency

I’m a graduate of Tai Solarin university of education (B.ed) Educational management student, and I’m currently a school owner.

Tell us about your political journey, and why did you join Politics?

The whole journey started in 2020 after the endsars protest. The youths decided to form a party called Youth Democratic Party of Nigeria ( YDPN )from Facebook after to WhatsApp and from there to physical meetings. But we couldn’t register the party, and we decided to merge with SDP.

I was discouraged somehow while in YDPN because people believe the youths were only deceiving themselves, they believe we won’t be provided the opportunity to govern. Then I was the State secretary and later the state coordinator Femi Ajadi the present NNPP Ogun State flag bearer decided to merged with NNPP and the national decided to make me the YDPN Coordinator for ogun State chapter.

What's your experience in politics since you came in. What lessons have you learned?

My experience so far is that there is hope ahead. We all know what the politicians have turned Nigeria politics to. People are ready to cash out and that has made the journey somehow difficult, meanwhile the elderly ones are always ready to give their support because they believe they have someone like me as a child, but the illiterate among the youths are something else. But I can say it’s not really an issue because that’s one of the reason the youths came on board.

How will you describe the role of youths and their participation in politics?

There are youths that really want to see and experience the change, while there are youths that care less. The youths' participation in politics will only yield good results if one of the youths can be voted in this year.

I’m an indigene that really wish her constituency the best. I’ve tried to bring and still wish to bring the youths together

I’m always involved myself in any voluntary work that involve my constituency

I’m a hustler, I decided to start a school because I couldn’t secure a job and I always help the widows in terms of school fees and textbooks.

You are contesting for the seat of Ogun State House of Assembly, under the platform of Social Democratic Party, why did you think SDP is the platform for you?

We don’t have money to purchase other parties tickets and SDP made it free for the youths meanwhile SDP has no stain like other parties. There are rules for every candidate in SDP and meanwhile apart from SDP, the youths have their reasons and responsibilities to deliver the state.

What's your advice for youths in Ogun State and in politics?

For youths in Ogun State, I will advise believing in oneself and be focus. We are the future leader and the future have to begin in this coming election and to the youths in politics, for other youths out there, please try not to be greedy and self-centered. Only dream of things that will pave way for other youths.

How do you see other youthful politicians in your constituency?

YDPN youths are different from other youths in politics, there are reasons why we chose to come together but other youths in politics, especially in my constituency are not helping the matter, almost all the young ones have been turned to touts all for empowerment, and they are really blocking ways for we that decided to join politics because they always remind us that those that are presently in power are youths, and they are worst than the olds

Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years politically?:

if I have this opportunity to be voted in and if I’m privileged to deliver and change the narrative in this coming regime, I will be in federal house or as Ogun state governor in 10 years time. Nigeria must be great again and that’s our duty as youths and together we can succeed.
